Past Meetings
February 2010 Meeting: We had five members at our Monday (after Superbowl Sunday) February 8th Photo SIG meeting where we discussed the various aspects of attaching photos to e-mail. Unfortunately Curtis could not get his iBook to connect to the internet so that we could demonstrate sample mailings at the meeting itself. But we did have a lively discussion of ways to archive photographs.
January 2010 Meeting: We had nine members at our January 11th Photo SIG meeting. Anne Riegel shared some some of her photos and Curtis spoke of his tour of the Dharavi slums of Mumbai when on a cruise in December. (Scenes from the movie "Slumdog Millionaire" were shot in Dharavi.) The population density is an unbelievable 140 to 230 people per acre depending on total population estimates of 600,000 to 1,000,000 for the 432 acre area. No cameras were allowed on the tour but pictures can be seen from the website of Reality Tours and Travel.
After Mumbai the cruise stopped at Cochin at the southern tip of India and this is one of Curtis's favorite pictures from the cruise. These school children were having lunch and were surprised by our impromptu visit but their smiles said everything.
November 2009 Meeting: We had five members at our November 9th Photo SIG meeting. Joe Kimble gave us a quick presentation of the "Digital Photography School" website and the many subjects covered therein. Curtis Joe then presented more on the use of the HTML editor KompoZer showing a structured album of the photos taken at the October 12th Photo SIG meeting. Here is a screen capture of the first page of that album:
There will be no December Photo SIG meeting and the next meeting planned is for January 11, 2010.
October 2009 Meeting: We had nine members at our October 12th Photo SIG meeting. Doug Barnes presented some prints of photographs taken in the near-infrared range using an infrared filter. To quote from the website, "Why bother with infrared? Because it opens up an otherwise unseen corner of the world — one of serene beauty and never-ending surprise"
Then Curtis Joe gave a presentation of the use of the HTML editor KompoZer to create a photo album of all attending. Although the album was not fully completed everyone got a good idea of this WYSIWYG web page editor works.
September 2009 Meeting: We had eight members at our September 21st Photo SIG meeting. Doug Barnes gave us a presentation on "COLOR IMAGE ABSTRACTION" and showed us wonderful examples of work that he had done with color film in the darkroom. This type of work is almost a thing of the past in this era of digital photography. Doug mentioned he has tried to duplicate the process digitally with Photoshop but not with the same results. As Doug mentioned earlier these prints are "very contrasty with unusual colors and pointillist effects from the coarse grain" and they were indeed.
Velma Velez also shared pictures that she took in August of the Santa Cruz Lockheed fires near Davenport and south of Big Basin. Some really neat shots of helicopters involved in fighting the blaze. Here is a link to news article on that fire.
Then Curtis Joe gave brief introduction to work that he has done with the free software "Komposer" to create photo albums. Curtis is using this software as a means create a digital presentation in a "non-linear" fashion similar to the old Apple HyperCard software - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HyperCard.
August 2009 Meeting: We had a lively meeting of twelve members at our August 10th Photo SIG meeting. Lynne Schmitt gave us a very informative presentation on camera usage WHEN "AUTOMATIC" DOESN'T WORK. Lively discussion on aperture control, depth of field, etc. Lynne presented examples illustrating various techniques and also recommended a book “Understanding Exposure” written by Bryan Peterson. Lynne also mentioned the possibility of arranging a photo shoot outing in the future with professional photographer Paul Tsang of San Carlos.
"Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson: Photographers new to SLR camera's are often frustrated by photo's that are either too dark or too light. Off coloring and blown out highlights are other common problems. Even photographers who have been around for a while, may come across difficult lighting situations where they aren't quite sure what camera settings they should be using when it comes to exposure. It's times like these, where the book 'Understanding Exposure' is most useful. No doubt, it is one of the best books written, explaining how camera exposure works.
July 2009 Meeting: We had nine members at our July 13th Photo SIG meeting and Edd Dundas gave us a wonderful presentation “PHOTO RESTORATION USING PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS”. Using a portrait photograph of his great grandmother, Edd demonstrated the various steps he took (and there were many) to restore the original. In a sense it was more that just restore but a re-creation of the original with all the tools available with Photoshop Elements. So thanks to Edd for making Photoshop Elements appear less "Greek" to us.
June 2009 Meeting: Ten were in attendance. Kei Nakano and Wilma Velez gave a great presentation on the steps necessary for entering the county and state fair photo competition. One thing for certain: entering the San Mateo County Fair competition is a lot easier and is the one to try first. But, before you enter it you have lots of work in getting that great print, matting, and framing. And they brought in some of their award winners, besides. Thanks, Wilma and Kei, for the presentation.
Fred Offenbach discussed possible future group meetings or classes in Photoshop Elements; there was a good amount of interest in meeting, and it is just a matter of making a plan for the group that will be agreeable to the City. Anyone interested in getting more info should send an email to Fred with PSE Group as subject.
May 2009 Meeting: We had ten members at our May 11th Photo SIG meeting. Beau Gill showed us a photograph print of his that was made from a series of shots taken at different shutter speeds. The result was a picture of amazing dynamic range that it looked almost like a painting. Ed Dundas showed us work that he had done restoring an old 1920 photograph of his great-grandmother. Doug Barnes shared with us copies of the magazine “Black & White Magazine for Collectors of Fine Photography”. This is wonderful magazine with photographs from all over the world. Joe Kimble then gave us a preview of his Keynote presentation on Helsinki, Finland. Curtis Joe then discussed his recent trip to Toronto, Canada along with pictures of the Art Gallery of Ontario Museum and the Royal Ontario Museum.

April 2009 Meeting: We had ten members at our April 13th Photo SIG meeting and Leon Delisle gave us an overview on making movies with digital cameras. Leon mentioned the plethora of equipment that is now available for making movies and that almost all simple digital cameras have a movie mode. Just to illustrate how easy this can be done, during Leon's talk, a short video clip was taken in the classroom and then projected from the Mac.(photo above) We then had a lively discussion on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
March 2009 Meeting: Curtis was on a mission, so Fred chaired the meeting -- there were 10 in the lively group today. Joyce Friedlander did a great job of demonstrating the making of a photo book using iPhoto. Joyce, and the program, really make it look easy, and I also think that it really is easy! Thanks Joyce. Following Joyce's presentation, there was a lively discussion about the work of Frederic Larson, staff photographer for the SF Chronicle; this was the result of a photo of the moon as framed by the Golden Gate bridge.
Leon Delisle will be leading the group next month on video and your camera.
February 2009 Meeting: We had 10 members in attendance. Unfortunately Wilma Velez had to postpone her presentation “Preparing For A Photo Competition/Show” which will now be scheduled at a later date. As an alternate presentation Fred Offenbach showed us a simple homemade “shoe box” device for copying 35mm slides using a digital camera with close up focusing. What ensued was then a lively discussion about archiving old 35mm slides, VHS tapes, 8mm film, etc. With this discussion about old family pictures, we have asked any member to share with us at our next meeting a five minute (or less) biographical presentation.
